Tips For a More Remote Friendly Office

Tips For a More Remote Friendly Office

What was initially only affecting a handful of countries and areas has spread across the globe. COVIID-19 has affected everyone around the world in one way or another as we all are forced to live, and work, in quarantine and isolation. While this may be nothing new for those already well acquainted with working from home, to others this is a much more daunting and foreign concept.

As businesses rush to implement remote, teleworking policy and procedure, workers across the globe are also starting to settle into the different strategies and schedule of continuing work from their home office or living rooms.

Here’s some tips to help you create your own remote friendly office in the midst of the global quarantine.

Set a daily structure, even when it’s not required

Disciplined structure is an ever important aspect of any occupation, let alone one in which you work from home. Whenever possible, setup a daily, structured schedule and stick to it. Even if it’s simple things such as assigning a time to check email and start routine tasks, it will help give you a better sense of ownership of your time, while also allowing you to better plan for the next issue or problem that needs solving.

When working a traditional job, there is usually some form of activity or travel that between “Home” activities and “Work” activities, such as commute etc. When working from home, setup a disciplined schedule of accomplishing your normal home related activities, before isolating yourself from these distractions and focusing on work responsibilities.

Still having issues making the break from home to work responsibilities? Try taking a walk or having a short workout after your home activities are complete to help breakup the time and signal yourself as a transition to work responsibilities and efforts.

Create an office environment that allows you to truly “own” it.

Creating a productive office environment is about “owning” it, regardless of where you sit. Whether it’s a room all to yourself, or a shared space, surround yourself with things that stimulate your senses and bring you joy.

For instance, have a collection you’re proud of? Place it within eye sight.

Have a particular scented candle or incense you enjoy? Be sure to include it.

Does a specific type of music or talk radio put you in a better mood? Don’t be afraid to turn it on.

With the freedoms of working from home come a better flexibility for finding your productive style that works best for you to overcome any hurdles thrown your way.

Don’t be afraid to take a break.

Work culture, predominantly within the US has an overarching atmosphere of strict work appearances. Rather than allow workers to solve issues within their own creative process, many businesses instead institute various policies that restrict many forms of breaks and pauses needed to work through specific issues and resolutions.

If you happen to get stuck within a certain issue you just can’t get past, don’t be afraid to take a break. Go take a walk. Spend some time with your family. Even play a game or watch a short television show. Breaks can help you detach yourself from a negative tunnel vision and come back refreshed and ready to tackle the project. Just ensure you have the discipline to track and ensure the time you spend during breaks doesn’t become too excessive.

Communicate with management / staff

Don’t be afraid to over communicate to mitigate feeling isolated. Let’s face it, many workers are simply not used to self disciplined and paced working environments. That’s not to say they can’t be successful, just that it is a different and foreign work process for many individuals.

While working from home, understand that you will need to communicate more often then within your traditional environments. Don’t be afraid to double check and at times over communicate with management. Remember, you are beginning a new working process just like your management is, with communication being one of the most important aspects of a successful work environment.

Eat in a separate location than your home office / space when available.

Hastily scarfing down food at your home office desk can have negatively affecting mental and digestive effects. Whenever possible, take the time to eat meals away from your work environment. This allows you to distance yourself from your work, even while quarantined in an isolated setting.

Not only will you have a better, healthier eating experience, but you’ll also be able to be better refreshed and recharged, ready for the next work obstacle.

Communicate the need for “space”

Ensure that family members and significant others understand that working from home does not mean you are available all the time. It’s a common occurrence for other members of the household that may not be working to assume you can take a break at any time, or encourage you to slack off on your work due to the issues at hand.

While it is important to ensure you have the creative freedom and flexibility to take a break when needed, it is equally important that you are able to apply disciplined structure to your day and environment.

Simply explain to other members of your household that you will need privacy and space to accomplish your work, while also spending more time with family when work is completed.

Don’t be afraid to fight productivity with productivity

Feeling stuck on an issue? Take a break and complete a household chore to allow yourself to further think about the issue at hand. Rather than simply taking a “relaxing” break, being productive can many times keep you in a productive state of mind, allowing you to kill two birds with one stone.
